Welcome to the official website for Niamh Ni Charra. For Promoter information, please visit the Gallery page July 2010 Despite volcanic eruptions which luckily saw the cancellation of only one gig in Mexico, Niamh has spent the last few months performing all over the world, while also working on her new album, due for release next month. April saw Niamh perform for the first time at CeltFest Cuba, a fantastic new festival. She performed with fellow Irish musicians Liam O Maonlai, Brendan Begley and family along with top class Canadian musicians from Cape Breton Island, Prince Edward Island and the West Coast. It was a wonderful festival and was particularly encouraging to see the strong celtic link and high standard among the local musicians. May saw Niamh team up again with Ibon Koteron for the return leg of the Basque Irish Connection tour, in the Basque country. As successful as the original Music Network Tour of last September, it has encouraged Niamh and Ibon to continue working together and plans for a 3rd tour are already in the works. Niamh and her band also performed to packed and enthusiastic audiences at festivals in Wales and England along with rejoiing her colleagues in the Carlos Nunez Band for a performance at the 2nd ever Tarab Tanger festival in Tanger, Morocco. As if this was not enough, Niamh has been working hard in studio finishing her new album "Sugach Samh / Happy Out". It will be launched next month and we will be keeping you posted. Until then, enjoy the rest of the summer! March 2010 The first few months of this year have been a very busy time for Niamh with plenty of concerts, collaborations and projects in the works. January saw Niamh perform at Celtic Connections for the first time, both under her own name and as a member of the Carlos Nunez band, some numbers of which were recorded live for BBC Scotland. February included a very special concert in the INEC in Killarney, to raise funds for Haiti, for which many musicians performed, all for free. Niamh teamed up with Seamas Begley and Donogh Hennessy for this concert which was a resounding success, and raised over 20,000 Euros. Which brings us to March! This month has been a hectic one and we're only half way through it! Following a lovely concert in Porthcawl, South Wales, Niamh then began work in earnest on her new album, with the first few tracks successfully recorded. The remainder of this album will be recorded over the next few months, and is earmarked for release in July. If you can't wait until then to hear Niamh, we're thrilled to announce that you can hear her concertina work on the latest album from the masters of the tradition, The Chieftains. Released earlier this month, "San Patricio" features many top class musicans from all over including Ry Cooder, Linda Ronstadt, Carlos Nunez and the lovely voice of Liam Neeson. Niamh is currently on a 12 concert tour of France with Carlos Nunez, and then on returning to Ireland, promptly swaps suitcases and heads to Havana, Cuba, for the first ever Celtic festival. Representing Ireland along with the Begley family and Liam O Maonlai from Hothouse Flowers, Niamh will be performing alongside musicians from Cape Breton Island, Prince Edward Island, Asturias, Brittany and of course Cuba. To read more about this brand new festival, check out CeltFest Cuba. Finally April finishes with more studio work on the new album, which we will of course be keeping you posted on. For more information on this, and future dates, make sure you check back here soon! December 2009 Season's greetings to everyone. We hope you all have a wonderful, healthy, happy, peaceful and tune-filled holiday! We have been busy updating Niamh's website to include a host of new live photographs taken by some of the best music photographers on the scene today. Please check out the Live Page in the Gallery section to see new photographs from recent tours and festival performances including the Autumn Music Network Tour, the US summer tour, and performances at Tonder, Dranouter, Shetland, Baltimore Fiddle Fair and many more. We have also updated the tour page to include details of Niamh's upcoming television appearance on Christmas Day as part of "Geantrai na Nollag". Geantrai is one of Ireland's most popular Irish music and song programmes, which goes out 13 times annually on TG4, the Irish language station. It is also watched worldwide through the internet. The Christmas special will feature Niamh performing with the Brock McGuire band, along with performances from Matt Molloy, John Carty, Arty McGlynn, Paul Brady and Liam Og O Flynn among others. The tour listings also include upcoming performances at Celtic Connections in Scotland, one of the largest and most respected folk festivals internationally. Finally, for those of you looking to finish off your Christmas shopping, we are delighted to announce that Niamh's CD is available for the reduced price of $15, on CD Baby. This Christmas special is only available for the month of December, and includes a further 20% discount for multiple purchases. Nollaig faoi shean is faoi mhaise diobh go leir. Merry Christmas! October 2009 We are delighted to announce that Niamh's "Deoraiocht an tSaighdiura" track from her debut album, which was nominated in the 2009 JUST PLAIN FOLKS MUSIC AWARDS was placed in the final Top Three. The nominees were chosen from over 560,000 songs, submitted from various sources including CD Baby, and the gruelling selection process took a total of 14 months. Niamh was nominated along with 19 others in the "Celtic Instrumental Song Category". September saw Niamh complete a very successful Irish tour, supported by Music Network, called "The Basque Irish Connection", alongside Basque musician Ibon Koteron, and Irish Guitarist Gavin Ralston. The tour was very successful and received great reviews, and Niamh and Ibon are now happily planning to take this tour to the Basque country. We will keep you posted on their progress! Niamh is currently heading to France for two concerts with the Carlos Nunez band, before joining the Brock McGuire Band for their Autumn US tour. Niamh performed with the Brock McGuires earlier this year at the lovely Shetland Folk Festival, and is looking forward to rejoining them for this 10 city tour. Dates for this tour and other upcoming concerts are listed on the tourpage. Finally we are currently working on updating the Gallery page to include many new photos taken over the last few months at some of the largest festivals across Europe and America. So be sure to check back soon. August 2009 This month was yet another busy month for Niamh! It started with her return from a very successful tour in the US with her band, which she then followed with concerts all over Europe with the Carlos Nunez band. These concerts were to launch Carlos' new album Alborada do Brasil and included Lorient and Tonder, probably mainland Europe' two biggest folk festivals. The album, which feature's Niamh's concertina and fiddle playing on several tracks, has been getting some great reviews. Along with this busy schedule, Niamh has also been working hard on preparations for her Irish tour next month. This tour, which is presented by Music Network, features Niamh along with Basque musician Ibon Koteron, on Dultzaina, Alboka, and Txistu and Gavin Ralston, on Guitar. For more information check out Music Network. All concert dates are listed on the tour page. Niamh is also working on future projects which include a further collaboration with the Brock McGuire band, and Niamh will be joining them on their US tour in October and November. July 2009
Niamh is nominated along with 19 others in the "Celtic Instrumental Song Category" which the organizers define as both traditional and contemporary original Celtic Music. The awards are organised by Just Plain Folks Music Organization, the world's largest grassroots music organization, and are the largest of any kind in the world. Due to the sheer volume of music considered, the awards are only issued every 2 years, and will take place this year in America's music capital, Nashville, in August. June 2009 Despite the recession kicking in with a vengence over the past few months all over the world, Niamh has luckily managed to stay busy, with various exciting new projects. May saw Niamh team up with renowned musicians Paul Brock, Manus McGuire and Denis Carey of the Brock McGuire band, for a week long visit to the Shetland Folk Festival. A wonderful, friendly and well run festival which saw musicians from all over (16 bands in all) team up after concerts for amazing sessions that regularly ran into the next morning, it was thoroughly enjoyable for both musician and audience member alike. This was followed by the Baltimore Fiddle Fair, which had an equally impressive line up and atmosphere, with the whole village getting involved and performers extending their visit in order to relax and unwind with fellow performers. Both festivals were extremely well run and their organisers (Dave Henderson SFF, and Declan McCarthy BFF) should be commended for doing such a fantastic job, especially in a time of drastically reduced funding. Both festivals also had their own wonderful photographers and we have included photos taken of Niamh at both festivals, in the 'Live' page in the photo gallery. Following on from Niamh's award in February (The Best Fiddle/Violin in the 2008 Irish Music Awards, run by The Irish Music Association in Missouri, USA) we are happy to announce her first US tour, which will take place in July. The band are looking forward to the trip and if you're in the neighbourhood, we hope you'll join us. These and other dates have been added to the tour page. Work continues with the Carlos Nunez band and enters a new and exciting phase in the coming months. Niamh has been busy recording with Carlos on his new Brazilian themed album "Alborado do Brasil" which comes out this month, and it will be launched at various festivals including, Lorient and Tonder, over the summer. It features not only several top class Brazilian musicians, but also Irish band The Chieftains, and the tracks Niamh recorded alongside these Irish legends are among her favourite. Finally Niamh has been working on a new project with well known Basque musician Ibon Koteron. Along with top class Guitarist Gavin Ralston, Niamh and Ibon will be touring Ireland in September, with the support of Music Network. More details of this tour will be announced shortly. February 2009
She is currently working on a few new projects which will be announced over the coming months, so please stay tuned! January 2009 We are delighted to announce that Niamh has been nominated for an award in the category of Best Fiddle/Violin in the 2008 Irish Music Awards, run by The Irish Music Association in Missouri, USA. On-line voting will be open to the public for a brief period, from today to 22nd January 2009. We would be thrilled if you could support Niamh by voting for her. To do this simply click on the icon above and follow the instructions on their site. Thanks!!! December 2008 Christmas greetings to everyone. It has been a quiet and relaxing few weeks for Niamh after a hectic schedule, and after profiting from the break to recharge and catch up with family and friends, Niamh will shortly be back on the road and as busy as ever. The Irish Folk Festival tour was a resounding success with many new fans discovering Niamh's music. It was also a pleasure for Niamh to tour with Liadan, Beoga and Griogair and while her table tennis skills still leave a lot to be desired, her poker playing has come on, so be warned! Instead of accompanying her fellow musicians back to Ireland, Niamh instead flew to Buenos Aires, Argentina where she performed with Carlos in the famous Coliseum Theatre. She then performed solo the following night at Fahy's Irish Cultural centre, before bringing many of Argentina's own Irish music fans onto the stage for an informal session, much to the delight of the large Irish-Argentine community who had gathered. Both concerts were attended by the Irish Embassador to Argentina and were part funded by Culture Ireland. Niamh is looking forward to returning to Germany in January for another tour, this time as a member of the Carlos Nunez band. Prior to that, however, she will be performing in New York at the APAP conference as part of the Island Heart Artists showcase. All upcoming concerts are listed on the tour page. We have also been busy updating the promoter's section to include a 7 minute promo video of the band. We have also updated the live photos page to include pictures taken at Yn Chruinnaght this year. Niamh was interviewed recently for Irish Music Magazine, and the interview has been added to the interviews page, along with a few previously unlisted interviews. We hope you enjoy all the additions. Wishing you all a happy holiday, and all the best for 2009 October 2008 To all new viewers - welcome! To return visitors - welcome back! We have been busy since your last visit, updating the photo gallery and interview section and adding a promoter's page to the gallery, complete with stage plans and high resolution photographs. We have also, unfortunately, had to remove the link to www.tradmusic.com as this wonderful site has been forced to shut down due to lack of funding. However, not all is doom and gloom, and we're happy to report that Niamh herself is as busy as ever. Recently returned from performing in the official opening ceremony of Celtic Colours, as a member of the Carlos Nunez band, alongside Cape Breton greats such as Jerry Holland, J.P. Cormier, and the Blue Engine String Quartet, she is now in the midst of the hectic Irish Folk Festival Tour, performing all over Germany and Switzerland with the lovely lads and ladies from Beoga, Liadan and Griogair. This gig is not one to be missed, with standing ovations every night since it's opening night in Speyer. Check out the tour date section to see if it's coming anywhere near you! July 2008 We are delighted to announce that Niamh has recently joined the roster of Island Heart Artists in North America. She joins fellow Irish groups Liadan and the David Munnelly band and is looking forward to performing in the US and Canada in the near future. She will also be performing in The Irish Folk Festival tour in Germany, France and Switzerland, alongside Griogair, Beoga and Liadan. Gig listings for this tour, along with upcoming gigs with Carlos Nunez, and as a solo artist have been added to the Tour page. April 2008 This month sees Niamh returning to her home soil for a series of concerts accompanied by Mike Galvin in some of the nicest venues around Ireland. These include a benefit concert for the much loved and respected Cape Breton fiddler, Jerry Holland, who was diagnosed last year with bone cancer which he has been valiantly battling ever since. If you too would like to help please check out the Jerry Holland Fund website. Niamh has also recently been signed to Glasgow based UK Music Management company Oscar Music Agency. February 2008 We are thrilled to announce that Niamh has been presented with "The Best Traditional Music Act 2008" award by The Irish World. She flew in from Germany, where she is currently on tour with Carlos, to receive the award in the Galtymore hotel, London, where the black tie event took place. The Irish World is the largest newspaper for the Irish community in Britain, and hosts the annual awards recognising the contributions of rising and established Irish stars both in Ireland and around the world. Niamh returned the following morning to Germany where she is busy performing with Carlos. She has also just signed up for the Irish Folk Festival tour which takes place later in the year all around Germany, and will be performing alongside Beoga, Liadan and Griogair in the 5 week tour. December 2007 We are delighted to inform you that Niamh's album "n D Thaobh / From Both Sides" has been listed in respected music reviewer Colin Irwin's Top Ten Folk Album's of 2007 for MOJO magazine. Niamh is the only Irish artist listed. If that wasn't enough good news, "Lios U Bhign", the last track of the album, has been included in Demon Music Group's double CD compilation of Irish Music. The compilation entitled "Experience Ireland" includes such luminaries of Irish Music as The Bothy Band, De Danann, Tada, Grda, Cathal Hayden, Seamus Begley and Jim Murray, and Solas. August 2007 At the Ballyshannon festival, Niamh was delighted to be chosen as the featured artist on this year's poster, designed by Barry Britton. She joins Mairad N Mhaonaigh, Liam g Floinn, Sharon Shannon and Rnan Snodaigh, all of whom have been featured in previous years. She opened for Altan, accompanied by Mike Galvin, and received a standing ovation - an unusual feat for an opening act. She followed this with performances, both as a solo artist and with Carlos Nunez at The World Fleadh, and performed encores on both occassions. She continues to receive lots of airplay and great reviews. Her CD is now being distributed by Claddagh Records following Gael Linn's decision to shut down it's distribution. Check out both the review and tour pages for updated information.
June 2007 While performing over the last 5 weeks to appreciative Riverdance audiences, Niamh has also been busy learning music for her upcoming shows with Carlos Nunez. The tour page shows the latest concert listings. Make sure you check it out. "n D Thaobh / From Both Sides" Niamh's album is now available on CD Baby for international customers.
May 2007 Niamh's album will go on release in the UK on the 14th of May and has already caught the attention of Folk Radio UK. Niamh continues to perform accross Ireland over the coming months. She will be opening for Altan at The Ballyshannon Folk Festival, and will be giving workshops over the weekend. She is also returning to perform with Riverdance in Letterkenny and Killarney. March 2007 :: Album Launch Following the launch, Niamh and Mike played support for Dervish at the festivals final concert to a rapturous audience.
December 2006 :: Album Launch The album is an opportunity to showcase Niamh's virtuosity on both fiddle and concertina, and she is joined on the album by well-known musicians Brendan Begley, Robbie Harris, Eoghan O Neil, Mike Galvin, Cathal Synnott and Conor Shiel.. The album certainly has variety - besides the expected mix of Irish tunes (jigs, reels, hornpipes, slow airs etc.), there are also tunes from the United States and Canada (Cape Breton), a set of Hungarian folk tunes and, incredibly, a classical piece for concertina by an Italian composer along with some lovely compositions of Niamh's own. The first of many launch gigs will be held in Killarney as part of the Gathering Festival line-up, and Niamh will be following this with an Irish tour to promote the CD including Whelans in March. For a full list of gigs, please check out the tour listing page.
