IRISH AMERICAN NEWS It was about two years ago that I first got Niamh Ni Charra's CD Ón Dá Thaobh (From Both Sides). It was lovely, showing off her talents that she polished playing with Riverdance on fiddle, concertina and voice. It was a happy man I was to see the mail carrier walk up with Niamh's new CD Súgach Sámh (Happy Out). Once again she serves up a banquet of great concertina, talented fiddle and the loveliest vocals. I was especially taken with her work on "Paddy's Lamentation", a song written not long after the American Civil War, detailing the way Irish immigrants were preyed upon by military recruiters as they fled famine in Ireland for war in the US. She also ripped tears from me with her version of Jerry Holland's "Lonesome Eyes". It wasn't all sadness on this CD though, because with her selection of reels and polkas she's had our feet restless since we opened the CD. A lovely selection that deserves a listen and a read of the liner notes to truly appreciate the beauty of it all. Jack Baker, Piping It In, IRISH AMERICAN NEWS, October 2010 |
